1 week prior • Leave copies of passport, visa, itinerary and other important documents with family, separately from the originals. • Sign up for the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program Day Of Departure • Wear your YFU gear so travel staff can recognize you! • Keep your passport, visa, and other important documents on your person or in your travel pouch available for airport security and customs officials. These should never be left in your checked luggage. • Leave early to get to the airport (always arrive 2-3 hours before an international flight) • Be aware of time requirements to check luggage and clear airport security. • Know the airport terminal you need to depart from before arriving at the airport. • Label all of your baggage both inside and outside of the bags • Do not lock your bags unless the lock is TSA approved, or else they will be removed • Have some US currency and host country currency available • Pack some snacks, music, and some reading material • Pack your copy of “The Guide”, host country welcome letter, host family placement letter, and other important information. • Drink plenty of water on your flight to stay hydrated • Contact your family upon arrival to let them know you’ve arrived safely! • Resist the urge to buy everything you see upon arrival.
