ATWORTH HISTORY GROUP
The June meeting was entertained to a very interesting presentation by Bill Moore which
explored the history of Henry V111's battleship the Mary Rose. Built in 1509 it formed part of the
fleet of warships bequeathed by Henry V11 to his son and served in three wars prior to being
sunk in the approaches to Portsmouth Harbour in 1545. Bill was one of a large team of divers
who worked on locating the remains of the ship and as a trained carpenter has since made
many replica artefacts from a total of over 19,000 items that have been recovered from the
Mary Rose. The warship was dramatically raised from the sea bed in 1982.
Members were allowed to handle replicas including tools, medicine jars and even a peppermill
with Bill's wife, Merle, providing explanations. Bill concluded his talk with an illustrated guide to
the new museum that opened in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard last year.
This talk ended the 2013/14 series and the new season will begin again on Monday, 6th of
October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall/Institute. New members and guests are always welcome.
Finally, a reminder that the Parish Boundary walk will take place on Saturday, 30th of August.

Visiting the Village Museum.
If you are visiting the Museum and the farm gateway is flooded, either drive through
the puddle and park on the grass opposite the Museum, or if you are walking come up
the Poplar Farm drive and walk through the garden, in which case please make sure
all 3 gates are firmly closed when you leave.
