Rashida Tlaib and Sarah Roberts Summary Narrative of the Policy: This bill, also known as the Paid Sick Leave Act, would allow workers to earn one hour of paid sick and safe leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours annually – or approximately five days for a full-time worker – for workers in businesses with fewer than 10 employees and up to 72 hours annually – approximately nine days for a full-time worker in larger businesses. Furthermore, this bill prohibits employer retaliation against an employee for requesting, exercising, or enforcing rights related to an employee’s paid sick leave. Relevant Talking Points & Important Information: • The Paid Sick Leave Act would allow employees to use job-protected time off for their own health condition, medical appointment or preventive care, or for those of a family member. “Family member” is defined as the employee’s child (or the child of a spouse or domestic partner), parent (or the parent of a spouse or domestic partner), spouse, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse or domestic partner of a grandparent or sibling, or “any other individual related by blood or affinity.
