Policy Reader Building a Healthy and Inclusive Society 2013 Comprehensive Sex Education in Schools Sponsored by Colorado Representatives Duran and Moreno Target Level of Office: State and School Board Summary: This bill creates a comprehensive human sexuality education grant program. The moneys distributed through the program must only be used for the purpose of providing comprehensive human sexuality education programs that are evidence-based, culturally sensitive, medically accurate, ageappropriate, reflective of positive youth development approaches, and that comply with statutory content standards. This legislation declares proper sex education to be a right for all students. Included in this legislation is a requirement for HIV/AIDS education and prevention, education on the link between HPV and cancer, and the use of contraceptives and condoms. Link to More Information: Expansion of Reproductive Health Care Target Level of Office: State Summary: This California bill expands access to reproductive health care in the state by allowing qualified health care professionals to perform early abortions. The bill allows nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician assistants who have completed the appropriate training to perform an abortion by medication or aspiration techniques in the first trimester of pregnancy.
