Paschall serves as the Maryland state director, assisting in the recruitment of new YEOs and increasing member engagement. Paschall also took on a leadership role within the State Directors program serving as the chair of the Policy and Partner Organization Subcommittee. In this capacity, Paschall spearheaded the efforts to promote and distribute YEO policy resources to other members in his state while steering the policy direction of the Network by serving as the liaison to the policy team. Paschall has assisted the policy team’s support efforts on LGBTQ and non-discrimination policy. SH w w w .YEON e t w o r k . o r g We were proud to honor Missouri state Senator Maria ChappelleNadal as the recipient of the 2015 Barbara Jordan Leadership Award. Chapelle-Nadal has been a leading advocate for her community in Ferguson following the fatal shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown. She stood and marched in solidarity with her community, even in the face of tear-gas and physical threats. She has been a bold and courageous voice for change and for the Black Lives Matter movement. YEO Network Leadership Award The YEO Network Leadership Award seeks to recognize a YEO who has shown great dedication to the YEO Network during the year through support and leadership. ER YEO F r o n t l i n e N e w s • Q3 2015 • PG 10 The Women’s Pre-Conference continued on Thursday with the Caucus’ first ever policy session – a request from last year. Partners from Generation Progress, American Women, Make It Work, and Higher Heights joined in a dynamic discussion of “Leading with a Women’s Agenda,” and broke down how a variety of policies impact women and communities in disparate ways – and how a broad working families’ agenda is finally taking center stage. The morning continued with the always-popular “Mentors Panel,” where the YEOs heard from alumnae and advisors. We were excited to welcome Delia Garcia, Angela Rye, Erin Vilardi, and our own Faith Winter, who spoke candidly about their experiences and findings both serving as and training elected women. The PreConference closed with YEO reflections, a space for the members to answer their own questions, share personal experiences, and build a sense of community. This award honors Congresswoman Jordan’s dedication to public service and our country by recognizing an outstanding young elected official who is following in her footsteps. The Barbara Jordan Leadership Award will be given to a young elected official who has shown dedication and support to the YEO Network and has a distinguished record of public service to their community and to the progressive movement at large. of communications for Lt. She then served as Missouri’s senior advocate, where she shepherded legislation such as the Senior Care and Protection Act of 2003 and the Missouri Senior Rx Generic Drug Rebate. In addition to her legislative duties, Chappelle-Nadal is a director on the University City School Board. She also served three terms in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2004-2010. In 2002, Chappelle-Nadal was one of 16 national fellows chosen by the National Organization for Black Elected Legislative/Women and the Center for American Women in Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University. She is a former participant of the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life (2004) and the Neighborhood Leadership Academy (2002) at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Wednesday closed with a networking reception, where the women heard from Neera Tanden of the Center for American Progress on the importance of women serving in elected office – and the impact when they do. Barbara Jordan Leadership Award Barbara Jordan, a co-founder of People For the American Way Foundation, was a true visionary and public servant. Serving as the first African American woman in the Texas state legislature and the first African American U.S. congresswoman from the Deep South, Jordan championed voting rights and the causes of the poor, the disadvantaged, and people of color. While serving on the Judiciary Committee during the Watergate hearings, she rose to national prominence with her impassioned speeches about the Constitution, stating, “My faith in the Constitution is whole, it is complete, it is total.” POLICY On Wednesday, the Pre-Conference opened with welcomes and introductions, and the training kicked off with a session on effective communications led by Jess McIntosh of EMILY’s List. YEOs practiced shaping and telling their own stories and worked through strategies for countering sexism and ensuring their voices are heard and their leadership well-received. The women were also joined by Celinda Lake, who presented research and tactics The YEO Network Honored Leadership Award Recipients NETWORKING NETWORKING This year the YEO Network once again held our annual National Convening Women’s Caucus Pre-Conference, offering a space for our women-identifying members to share experiences, best practices, and training specifically geared for their needs.
