Message from the Chair and CEO

Chair Les Tyrell OAM CEO Dr Scott Crawford
Scott and I are proud of the staff and board ’ s many accomplishments this year , supported by a range of partners . Effectively delivering more than 30 projects across the region would simply not be possible without a huge effort from team members on the ground and in the “ engine room ” behind the scenes .
In October 2023 , NQ Dry Tropics launched an Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan , outlining actions to continue strengthening relationships with Traditional Owners and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community .
This coincided with celebrations marking 20 years since the first meeting of the NQ Dry Tropics Traditional Owner Management Group ( TOMG ), comprising representatives from 14 groups across the region . The TOMG meets regularly to provide cultural guidance , and we value the close relationships we enjoy with its members .
In keeping with the need to diversify funding streams , there was a particular focus on building capacity to branch into the growing environmental markets sector . This will stand the organisation in good stead to take advantage of future opportunities .
The introduction this year of a new project management system will help staff enhance efficiency , deliver even better results , and report achievements more effectively .
At a statewide level , Natural Resource Management Regions Queensland announced a strategic partnership with Powerlink Queensland , under which both organisations will work together to optimise the location and management of environmental offsets .
On a personal note , we bid a reluctant farewell to board member Julia Broad , who is moving on after a decade of service . We thank her for her efforts .
A three-year Corporate Strategic Plan released late last year laid out NQ Dry Tropics ’ aspirations , and set out five strategic pillars aimed at strengthening the workforce , planning more effectively , increasing on-ground impact , facilitating greater Traditional Owner participation and influence in natural resource management , and becoming more influential , visible and relevant .
We hope you enjoy the images , statistics and stories in this document , which give a sense of how NQ Dry Tropics is contributing to its vision of healthy landscapes and thriving communities in the Burdekin Dry Tropics .
Warm regards ,
Chair Les Tyrell OAM CEO Dr Scott Crawford
