Protecting ecosystems and threatened ecological communities
Coastal restoration project a success
Coastal ecosystems , including wetlands and creeks , provide essential habitat for native species including fish , birds , invertebrates and crustaceans , and capture nutrients and sediment before they reach the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon .
This year NQ Dry Tropics completed the From the Land To the Sea : Improving the Health of Coastal Ecosystems project , which focused on the Black , Haughton and Don catchments , between Townsville and Bowen .
Key activities included improving fish passage by constructing three fishways on the Haughton River , managing invasive plants and animals , and raising community awareness about how human activities affected threatened ecosystems and the species they supported .
The dune system on Lynch ’ s Beach , Alva , was protected from the threat of erosion and damage from 4WD vehicles through a combination of revegetation , fencing and signage . Indigenous employment group Three Big Rivers , Gudjuda Reference Group Aboriginal Corporation , and Lower Burdekin Landcare planted nearly 10,000 stems to stabilise the dunes . Several hundred additional stems were planted by members of the local community during a well-attended planting day .
