Maintenance and monitoring key to longevity of remediation works
The three-year Gully Maintenance and Monitoring project focused on monitoring 25 previously remediated gully sites , and undertaking maintenance where needed to ensure they continued working as intended . Participating landholders implemented grazing practices to allow vegetation cover to establish on remediated areas . The insights they provided on what had and hadn ’ t worked would inform future designs .

Grazier Barry Collett , of Todsure Station , was heavily involved in remediating , monitoring and maintaining three erosion sites on his property . A strong advocate for grazing peer-to-peer groups , he was an active participant in the Scottville Cluster of six neighbouring land managers who shared knowledge , skills and resources to tackle small-scale gully erosion problems .
Long-term monitoring of remediation works is key to determining the efficacy of various methods . The sites on Todsure are monitored every year after the wet season using the industry-standard Land Condition Assessment Tool and Gully Maintenance Tool .

“ We ’ ve learnt a lot about remediating and preventing erosion . Because a one-sizefits-all approach doesn ’ t apply to fixing erosion problems , it ’ s been great to speak with neighbours and see what they ’ ve done . Each property has its own unique issues and therefore what worked on one place wasn ’ t going to work on another . It ’ s also an opportunity to discuss grazing land management , and how to best improve pasture and soil health to make sure the integrity of the remediation works remain intact .”
