UNESCO visits the BBB
This year the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organisation ( UNESCO ) sent two experts on a fact-finding mission to the reef and reef catchments — and NQ Dry Tropics was proud to host them on a tour of the BBB .
It was an important opportunity for delegates to meet landholders and get their perspectives , while seeing the scale of the challenge posed by erosion , and the ongoing efforts to reduce the impact on the reef .
NQ Dry Tropics CEO Dr Scott Crawford ( second from left ) discusses on-ground works with UNESCO representatives during a visit to the BBB .
The two representatives saw a range of largescale and small-scale gully remediation projects delivered through the Landholders Driving Change project . They also learned about the many land and grazing management practice improvements implemented by landholders in the catchment .
Facing page : During a helicopter tour of the BBB , UNESCO representatives observed gully remediation measures , such as these rehydration banks constructed on Dartmoor Station . Each bank is around 200 metres long and was constructed above the head of the gully to halt further erosion . Rainwater is now held in the landscape instead of running into the gully system . The area was also seeded with native grasses to promote regeneration .
