Strategic Priorities

1 : SOLUTIONS FOR LIVING LANDSCAPES

Delivering evidence-based , landscape-level solutions , built on community needs .
NQ Dry Tropics ’ work protects waterways and the Great Barrier Reef ; maintains and restores biodiversity ; and improves rangeland condition . Our projects – informed by science , and supported by communities – promote sustainable , productive land use .
IMPROVING WATER QUALITY TO THE REEF
NQ Dry Tropics continued promoting and supporting better farming practices to reduce sediment , nutrient and pesticide runoff , and improve farmers ’ bottom line and resilience .
The following 10 pages showcase water quality improvement projects delivered in partnership with graziers , cane farmers and industry groups .
FOCUS ON : TACKLING EROSION AND PROMOTING PASTURE COVER ON GRAZING LAND
Fine sediment from soil erosion increases water turbidity in creeks and oceans , reducing available light needed by corals and seagrasses to thrive . NQ Dry Tropics partners with landholders and industry experts to tackle erosion through grazing management improvements , gully remediation and landscape rehydration ; to slow runoff , reduce soil erosion , build ground cover , and help improve productivity .
During 2020-21 NQ Dry Tropics supported graziers to :
• make better-informed decisions through business education , training and capacity building ;
• enhance the profitability and sustainability of their enterprises by improving soil and pasture condition , herd and stocking rate management , landscape function , business performance , and people management ;
• adopt practices to increase end of dry season ground cover , promote even utilisation of pastures , and mitigate erosion ; and
• learn and implement innovative regenerative agriculture approaches .
