Concept Note: Towards Parity Democracy (in Spanish)

The event – organized by Parlatino, UN Women, and the National Forum of Women in Political Parties – created a space for political debate on the creation of a regional framework for progress in parity democracy in Latin America. Its objective was to serve as a nexus for synergies among those working on issues related to women’s political empowerment throughout the region and at all levels. Work was carried out in five working groups: parity in representation; gender perspectives in public policies and institutions; strengthening women’s leadership; inclusive political parties that promote substantive equality; and structural factors that contribute to discrimination, stereotypes and gender violence.

"All of us have something to share, something to teach, and something to learn ... To strengthen [women’s leadership], the first thing we need is sisterhood. That is fundamental. From that starting point, we are sure to enrich our worlds and grow by convening, sharing agendas, sharing struggles and work spaces … Let us continue working so that this agenda transcends this meeting, that we take it to our countries and can arrive at the [leadership] spaces that correspond to us."

Gina Godoy, Member of the National Assembly of Ecuador and ParlAmericas board member

"I think it is tremendously important that in these forums like Parlatino and ParlAmericas we have on the agenda … women’s issues that in the end make the difference and are so relevant … to the legislative initiatives where what we’re trying to promote is women’s equality."

Claudia Nogueira, Member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile and Vice-President of

the Group of Women Parliamentarians
