Mother Tongue Fortnight 2019

2

Written by: Stephanie Mak, Class 3/2

The Mother Tongue Fortnight is back! It is an event that is part of our AssumptionKnights' tradition, which never fails to provide us with creative and refreshing content every year. With this year being no exception, the organisers of the Mother Tongue Fortnight events worked hard to bring the unique “Storytelling Workshop” to our school. This workshop was specifically selected to help us discover our own style of storytelling.

Acting out a story may sound easy but it actually requires a lot of preparation and teamwork. In order to tell a good story, we have to be both creative and enthusiastic. Our storytelling trainer, Teacher Wu, started off by having us play a mini ice breaker game to assess our standard of Chinese and encourage us to think outside of the box. She began with the easiest level, instructing us to strike a pose with a keyword that was given. We had a great deal of fun thinking of different poses to stand out from the others. We quickly levelled up and got to the advanced level. This was when it started to get a little challenging. The trainer told us to “look anywhere as long as you don’t see a person in front of you”. We were also told that one particular primary school class that she taught was able to think of more than ten ways to complete the task. We were determined to break that record upon hearing that and began thinking of several ways such as looking at our phone, lying face down, closing our eyes, et cetera. The game soon ended with us breaking that record while smiling from ear to ear.
