Interview with a Social Worker What would you change about your job role? I wouldn’t change my job role as such but I would like more autonomy to be able to make certain decisions in my role. Recently there has been a big shift towards various placement and financial decisions having to be agreed by the head of service rather than managers who are more accessible which means that important decisions are not made within reasonable timescales. What advice would you give to any young people who were interested in becoming social workers? Advice – Do it – it is a great job but also can be disheartening at times. Do not be afraid to challenge the systems / managers if you feel that they are not allowing you to give a young person the service they deserve. Be passionate. Make sure you have outside interests so you can properly shut off when you are not at work. 4.
