Here are just a few lines on each… Just to give you a flavour of what the different therapies have to offer:
Counselling- A talking therapy where you (usually individually) spend weekly sessions with a counsellor talking through any issues that you want to discuss. Generally counselling is a short term therapy, if you are referred to it via a GP, you will usually receive six sessions.
CBT- Cognitive behavioural therapy is another talking therapy. This approach looks at retraining you and the way you think. A good example of CBT is working with people with anxiety. CBT can help you to change how you think ('Cognitive') and what you do ('Behaviour'). It focuses on the 'here and now' problems and difficulties, instead of looking into the depth of your past. You can be referred for CBT through you GP and this is usually for a series of six sessions.
Psychotherapy- this is more in-depth and longer term therapy. Working with a psychotherapist you will look into the psychological reasons for you moods, feelings, and ways of being. This approach looks at you past experiences to help inform us of why you are who you are.
Play Therapy-This is a way of helping children express their feelings and deal with their emotional problems, using play as the main communication tool. This approach can also be used with adults!!!
Creative Arts Therapies- the Arts therapy group is made up of four separate professions; Art, Dance-Movement, Drama, and Music Therapy. They all share elements in common- using the creative arts as a way of expression, communication and bringing about psychological change. Basically… this is not a talking therapy (although you are allowed to talk!!) Creative arts therapists use their skills in creativity and psychological therapy to help you to address and resolve issues, or make troubling issues more bearable! Sometimes issues can be too overwhelming and hard to talk about… creative arts therapies allow you to work with these issues at a creative distance…. Without you having to feel overwhelmed!
