Bazaar Tales: storytelling night
Sure, you’ve gone and seen comedy, but have
you ever been to a storytelling event? I mean,
out of the seventeen people reading this magazine, you’re the only one reading this article, so
maybe you have been to a storytelling event.
But just in case you haven’t, and you
think storytelling might be a lame offshoot of comedy, I’d like to show you that
it’s really rather good!
To get a snapshot of such events, Yawp
ventured to ‘Bazaar Tales’, one of Melbourne’s regular, curated storytelling
nights run by Cock and Bull. The venue
itself, Horse Bazaar, was chill and welcoming, so you’ll feel pretty comfortable
when you rock up next week.
The night ran smoothly, featuring eight
storytellers - plus the MC - who per-
formed true stories to the theme of
“getting away with it”. And while the
performance style is different to standup, hearing disaster-filled accounts and
internal monologues laced with dramatic
irony, there’s no shortage of laughter.
If you like the sound of that, you might
like to know that Cock and Bull also run
an open-mic-style event called ‘Rocket
Clock Story Slam’ (as well as a festival
show called ‘Sinful Stories’).
If you’d like to have a go, Cathy Culliver,
who runs Cock and Bull, says you don’t
need to be a comedian to be a storyteller.
