Fringe Firs
The 2014 Melbourne Fringe Festival is host
to over 400 shows, 80% of which are new
productions. Melbourne’s Fringe is well
known for its creative freedom for contemporary performers, attracting the avant-garde of artistic minds.

This year the Fringe festival is the launching pad for three Melbourne comedians
embarking on their first solo shows. Sam
Rankin, Chelsea Hughes and Anthony
Jeannot sat down with YAWP to talk about
the Fringe experience.
“I love the support you get, and the other
performers that are doing shows. Even people who have been doing it for years seem
to do weirder or more experimental shows,
so when I started writing, I decided fringe
would be the place”.
Rankin chose the Fringe festival to debut
his solo show “Wake Up Sheeple” an explorative walk through conspiracy theories,
because of the experimental nature of
Fringe. He shared a few of the techniques
he used in order to prepare for his show.
Chelsea Hughes stars in “3 Little Gigs” at
the Imperial Hotel this Fringe. Hughes and
2 other comedians each have 15 minutes
on stage performing their stand up routines.
“For me it’s standing up and performing

it out loud, things like is this funny? Is this
“I’m really looking forward to having 15 minutes on stage, consecutively for 8 days. I
Cant wait to build that momentum”. Hughes
is also interested in collaborating with her
fellow peers in future festivals.
