Yawp Mag ISSUE 20: The Festival that Was | Page 5

the comedy festival that was publisher notes Beau Fitzpatrick @beaufitzpatrick Holy shit. That just happened. With the Melbourne International themselves throwing themselves into the next big project. I remember mentioning to you guys that we’d be making an announcement and so it would be remiss of me to hold it off any longer. READY? In 2009, we launched the Quarterly Retort. A comedy gala which seeked to remount and debut comedy festival and fringe festival shows every three months. The event was a joy to produce and we launched many shows for three years. However in 2012, the Retort came to a close as our production company focused more on the development of YAWP magazine. Well! With a gorgeous team working tirelessly on the magazine, we are proud to announce that we are bringing back the Quarterly Retort! Ohhhhhh my God. Asher Treleaven will be bringing back his show, ‘Smaller, Poorer, Weaker, Cheaper’. Kate McLennan will be staging, ‘The Duck’s Nuts’ and both Geraldine Hickey and Simon Keck will be bringing back old festival favourites that are to be announced. The Quarterly Retort has found a new home at Revolt artspace in Kensington. It has to be one of the sexiest spaces for comedy that I have ever seen. YAWP is also proud to present a regular comedy night called,’The Good Hurt’ which is a comedy room with a twist. Each month, marvel at the talent in the Melbourne Comedy Scene! Cannot wait for the next few months. Magazine director notes I need a holiday. I’m about to break something. However, before I scream into a pillow and jump into the next issue for the month, we must take a look back at the comedy festival that was; the winners, the grinners and the people who made it all come together. In this issue, we cover the victors of the special events that dot the MICF calendar. We talk with Matt Stewart, this year’s RAW comedy winner. Stephanie Tisdell recounts what it was like to win the Deadly Funny competition. And we speak with a host of big names such as Barry Award Nominees, The Boy with Tape on His Face, Kyle Kinane and Tim Key. We also spoke with Headliner Wil Sylvince and BBC presenter turned comic, Juliette Burton. YAWP was at the awards night and our reporter, David Claridad gives us a sneak peak into the festivities. We look back at the progression to talk with the man who guards the gates of the Melbourne Town Hall and has done so for the past 12 years. In his red coat and beaming smile, Paul recollects some of his most fondest memories of the festiSteph Gray val’s history. Enjoy the issue! @GARYGARYGARRYYY
