EDITOR’S NOTES
Sketch Comedy Edition
First and foremost, some massive news. Carly. Where's Carly?….. Carly? Noooooooo!
Yes it's true, Carly Milroy has taken leave of the magazine in pursuit of some remarkable opportunities in further study. She is looking into taking on her masters and
then onto her PhD in philosophy, specialising in improvised comedy. Which is pretty much the
geekiest thing I have ever heard of in my life.
There's comedy nerds, and then there are people who go to university for eight years to study
comedy and then become a doctor of comedy. Carly, you're a psycho and we will
miss you here at the mag.
And now this issue. But before we talk about sketch comedy, I am going to pass on a few
updates. The biggest one for this month is the launch of our Visual Media Team.
VMT for those in the know and MTV for those with dyslexia. Visual media is bringing the magazine alive with interviews and other YouTube-able projects. We have an exciting team
of people who are making video content happen. Steph Gray (our resident illustrator), Tamara
Issa, Jen Van Ewyk, Marion Slatter and Jay Morrissey are heading up our interview team.
If you would like to be an interviewer for YAWP, you have only to contact us.
The above people are also responsible for our video editing, which is a thankless job that constitutes the brunt of the work. In addition, Jonathan Soo Ho, Angus Roche and Louis Bergemann
are our crack team of video editors that have joined YAWP magazine. We are really looking
forward to some of the ideas and projects that will be generated with this new talented horde.
Sketch comedy. What's it all about? Well with such a massive topic, we can only scrape the
surface of an art form which finds it's origins in vaudeville. Since then, sketch has sprouted into
many forms. We talk with Jimmy James Eaton and Jason Geary about a purist approach to
sketch in improvised sketch. Nick Caddaye runs through the nuts and bolts of making and
producing sketch comedy.
In our analysis of sketch, some of the feature articles include the origins of sketch comedy and
what some of the famous sketches, sketch shows and sketch comedians that have emerged
from it's rich history. We go into how to write a sketch, the different types of sketch and how
youtube has taken sketch comedy to new dimensions.
Enjoy!
