Two other epic voyages should be mentioned here . the first being ! hat of Walter M . Marks who in 19 12 sailed his 10 metre yacht C11lwulla J [ f to Brisbane and back . The remarkable lhing about this voyage
\ VAS t . ba1 it took place in a yacht thtit \ Vi ' lS not ret1 . Uy designed for cruising but for out-and-out racing . Previously C11 / wul / a l / f had sailed to Melboun1e and back . A repon on ! hat cruise is on page 193 .
Another notable voyage was made by a past Captain of lite club and world champion yachtsman , Harold Vaughan , who sailed his Diamond class
yacht Saltash II to Melbourne and back for the national championships and repeated the dose by then sailing her to Brisbane and back for the same reason ! See page 186 .
In 1937 the Royal Australian Navy presented the club wilh tl1e binnacle from HMAS Swordsma11 , and the steering wheel and pedestal from HMAS Tattoo . These are now on display at the Sydney Club . lo 1938 Norman Wallis gave the club a gavel which was made from pan of the remains of HMS Nelson . Laid down in England iu 1805 and launched 1814 , the Nelson was presemed to Victoria in 1867 , arriving in Melbourne in 1868 . This gavel now rests on the committee table in tll . eGalatea Room . In 1938
Mr Wallis said , ' Thumping the table with lite fist has sufficed but tl1is wiU serve the purpose for lite Chairman to call the attention of a gathering .·
The foUowingprovides an interesting glimpse of requiremems in 1939 :
A Port KemblaRace is organised . Safety Regulations . ( I ) All competitors to carry floating appliances . ( 2 ) Each competitor shall carry on board a ch an of the course between Sydney and Port Kembla and a copy of a summary of tile sailing instructions . ( 3 ) Each yacht shall carry a reliable compass . ( 4 ) Regulation lights 10 be canied .

And so we come to Wood War U which was , of course , to have a great effect on club activities . On 26 August 1939 the Secrerary was instructed
10 supply tile Navy witb a list of vessels and owners . A number of these vessels were commandeered by the Royal Australian Navy during lite war .
At the Anoual General Meeting of the club in August 1939 the question of yacht racing during tile war was discussed . The members wan red to carry nut a program of races in an unostentatious manner . No entrnnce fees were to be charged . and no steamer was to follow the races . There were to be no trophies and no money prizes .
Under instructions from Admiralty , tl1e use of the blue ensign was suspended until the rennination of the war . There were no interstate races during the war , and Cadet dinghy races on Sydney Harbour were abandon . ed owing to lack of entries . Jubilee class racing went on for a time at the Pircwater where the clubhouse and slipping facilities had been extended . A number of Sydney Jubilee owners transferred ! heir boats to Lhe Piuwater for the Christmas holiday period and a series of races for tl1e Pi11water Championship Burgee was won by R . E . MiUard ' s F / eerwing .
By February l940 lite war was beginning to have a greater effect on the club . Restrictions were being applied to lite movements of club yachts . TheSecre-
