This boal was designed by a Mclboumearchiiect , C . Peel . They were originaly mean1 to sail on the rough , short seas of Port Phillip Bay . They are a splendid liule knockabout racing-day boat , 18 ft overall , 16 fl LWL . wilh swinging centreboards and inboard lead ballast . They carry 193.33 sq ft of sail and , 10 prevent sinking when filled up ( which occasionally hnppens ). 1hey carry flotation in lhe form of
kapok bolsters , airtigh1 ranks or cork built into the undersurface of lhe deck .. lbey have large coamings to prevenl laking in waler , as well as copious balfdccks forlhe same pwpose . Thcywerebuiltfor £ 100 in 1938 , and indeed several were built for Iha ! sum , but the following year i1COS1 £ 120 to launch a Jubilee complele wilh a sui1 of sails including a spinnaker . lllcy became of grca1 interest 10 lhe club as an ideal boat to be used to increase lhe membership a1 the Pi11wa1er which was just starting 10 come 10 life at tha1 time . II would awaken interest in the move 10 lhe Pittwater nnd provide racing LO be viewed by the Stale Governor , Lord Wakehursl , KCMG , who as Honorary Commodore of lhe club opened lhe Green Poin1clubhouse on 17 December 1938 . That day lhe Jubilee class had itsfirs1raceon lhePiitwaterwilh 14 starters . lllc race was won . appropriately enough , by 01 > e or tbC men respons1 ble tor Ille move to lhc Pittwaier and for gening lhe class staned in New Soulh Wales , J . R . Dingle .
1be Governor of ViclOria , Lord Huntingfield , presented an in1ema1e cup IO be raced for by Jubilee class yachis , and the firs I races for lhis cup were held inJanuary 1940 . Whenwarcamein J939andpetrol was rationed , preventing owners attending lhe club , lhe Jubilees lefl 1he Pinwater and after the war they remained in Sydney Harbour . The series for the Huntingfield Cup is now conducted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron .
The developmen1 of yacht racing up until 1he beginning of World War II is of interest . The 6 metre iype yacht , Awa1111i Ill ( aflerwards lolaire which
was still racing in 1955 ), was designed by lhe famous English naval archi1cc1 , Morgan Giles , for A . C . Saxton to retrieve the Northcote Cup from Victoria in 1920 . 1llc fact lha1 she was a 6 metre was not so remark . able , bu1 1he fact lhat she was Bermudan rigged was lhe new and interesting feature about lhis shy Little Oyer . Sydney had seen iis first tall , narrow sail wilh lhe high aspect ra1io and the slender Marconi masl wi1h i1s spidery , light , scientific rigging .
The Bermudan sails , which practically all yachts carry 1oday , were invenled in 1808 by a yachtsman on lhe island of Bermuda off the east coasl of America . This type of rig was developed from the shoulder-0f-mu11on rig which was often used in small boa1s of the Navy and Merchant Service to facilitaie handling and stowing . h is referred to in a
