Yachting and the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club 1988 | Page 61

On 8 November 1906 it was resolved to recommend to the Sydney Yacht Racing Association
to consider at an early date the advisability of adopting the International Rating Rule and the classes specified Ll1ercin for the 1907--08 and the following seasons up to 1918 , and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron be informed of such
action .
The International Rating Rule bad just been intro ยท duced in England and was designed to bring classes of yachts to a formula that did away with big sail areas and produced a more wholesome type of yacht .
By various formulae that have been modified over die years it controlled such things as overall length , berun , draft , overhangs . tonnage . waterline , length and sail area . It was the forerunner of the metre yachtS of today .
From this point there appears to have been a fall off in interest in the club . Quite a few lapsed meetings occurred . Yacht racing continued satisfactorily but . from an administrative point of view , interest appeared to wane . From 1907 , however , discussion centred on a JO metre class of yacht ( craft of9 metres and under were not considered ) with suggestions of quite healthy prize money for 10 metre yachts and those over 10 metres .
