From that date . handicap races were sailed SUCCCMfully and seem to have put new life into the sport , for we find as many as ten emries race afler race during lhe year . In addition to those named above , Vivall (/ iue , Why Not . Peri and Mistral appear again and ago . m .
The very first mces conduc1ed by the Prince Al ( -red Yacht Club were very diffcrcn1 from the flying starts , compu1erised handic : upping of today .
The original Stam were from an anchored position wilh mainsails only hoisted . And the handicaps were worked out by the owners themselves .
Looking back , the club conducted its firsl racing program on 7 March 1868 when lhe boats were divided in10 1hree classes . Staners in die ftrsl class boats ' race were : Challenge ( W . Andrews ), / rent ( M . McTaggan ), Ausrralion ( 1 . Graham and LA . Windeyer ).
The boats in the second race were : Galatea ( F . W . Gray and W . R . Hill ) und Emma ( W . Farmer ). und in the third race , lxion ( T . M . Brown ), Jona ( W . l .. aoglcy ), Dora ( Vice . CommodoreT . M . Strickland )
and Royal Oak ( W . Creed ).
In the race for lhe first class boats , Ausrralian drifted in at 6 pm , 30 minutes ahead of the second boat : Emma won the second class race . and lxio11 the third Challenge ran a . shore twice during the race for first cla . 5s yachts because of lack of wind , but the whole event ended happily when Commodore R . H < 1mett entenained crews nnd skippers aboard his yach1 Scud uf1er the racing .
Races were 001 held regularly every Saturday , but it appears ! hot varying numbers of races were held each season and it is chronicled ! hat in May 1871 , 1here were 18 yachts racing in three divisions and T . M . Brown , in his yacht / xio11 , on being presented with a cheque for £ 10prizernoney gave ii b . iclc to be put towards the club ' s funds , as they were at that time particularly low .
