classic events in those days .
Prior to the 1890s yacht measurements had not been taken very seriolllily , as yachts were classed according to tonnage , based on the Thames Measurement formula . The club adopted the length and sail are < i rule in 1895 ( adopted from the British Yacht Racing Association referred to earlier ) as :

James Cox then bad Herreslwffbutlt to a design by W . Pickering . This craft was 33.5 ft L WL and the first yacht LO take real advantage of the outside ballast in her hull design . She had long overhangs fore and aft , a bulb fin keel and a balanced rudder in imitation of the racers then being designed in the United States . She was a complete departure from the orthodox yacht design in Sydney and , as was expected , a flier . In J 899 she became the first yacht to win the One Hundred Guinea Cup presented to the club by Commodore Samuel Hordem .
Herreslwjfwas the first of the new type of yacht . the 30-ft raters , which at the turn of the century were to revolutionise yachting on Port Jackson .
