An event took place in 1886 which did much to turn men ' s thoughts towards improving the design of their yachrs . Sir William Clarke . a millionaire . challenged any yacht of Pon Jackson with his yacht Janet . Everyone thought the then champion of Port Jackson . Mr Fairfa . x ' s Magic , would compete againstJa11e1 . ButMr Milson put his yacht 1Vaita11gi into the hands of naval architect Walter Reeks who altered her ballast plan completely , and her owner invested in some new Laplliome sails . An epic race was arranged between Magic and Waitangi and much to everyone ' s ama ~ m ent Wairangi won .
This incident in our yachting history practically divides the first from the second era in yacht design . Well-known yachts such as Oithona , Sirocco , Violer , San , Dnris and Australian all bad their ballast moved outside , or most ofit , bur unfonunately they were nol designed for outside ballast . Their hulls were the same as they were when they carried inside ballast . The enormous possibilities of the lowering and placing of this outside ballast had not been explored . Some vessels suffered structural dllma1te . The alterations to Waitmrgi ' s lead ballast . as mentioned earlier , showed yachtsmen what could be done in this regard , and stamped ยท 1ead ' as the most imponant factor in yacht design .
