THE INTERN A Tl ON AL E22 CLASS
The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club was re ~ ponsible for introducing Ille E22 class into Australia . The class was designed in America by ' Skip ' Etchells which is the reason , of course . for their being commonly referred to as ' Etchells '.
1 \ vo RP A YC members . Roger Dane and Harry Sunon , were behind the move to bring this class to Australia in 1972 . The initial problems of funding the purchase of moulds and the selection of a builder were solved a tan inaugural meeting held at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club on 6 February 1973 . At this meeting eight trustees were appointed , four from New South Wales and four from Victoria . who were willing to guarantee a sum of $ 2000 each-a 101:11 of
$ 16 000 LO be spent on the purchase of moulds and other incidental expenses . This money was to be recovered over the first 30 boais or so at $ 800 per
boat .
E22s have surged ahead and there are now ten . separate Oeeis in Australia- < me each at Adelaide , Blairgowrie ( Vic .). Bot . any Bay , Brisbane , Gosford , Lake Macquarie . Melbourne , Penh . the Pinwater aad Sydney . There are alteady some 250 E22s in Australia .

Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club members have . done well in world championships . Wiru > ers have been Frank Tolhurst ( 1977 ), John Savage ( 1979 ), and Peter ( Pod ) O ' Donnell ( 19 & 0 ). Barrie Nesbiu also won the North AmeJ '. ican Championship .
