We gybed twice . each time having to bring the for ' ard guy right across amid $ hips . pass it outside the stays , and fix up for ' ardon a cleat just abaft the bun of the bumpkin . Jn gybing again later on , the gooseneckontheboomcarriedaway . Neilsenand
I were in the cockpit . Wal was for ' ard near the mast and the Skipper was down below . It might have been a very nasty accident , but fortunately the topping llftS were taut , and the boom swung for ' ard of the mast at the broken end and came down on the deck aft . I held the boom Inboard and steered whilst Neilsen and Wal went for ' ard and lowered away , and then held the gaff and the boom whilst they called the Skipper .
The work of dismantling the broken gear was prerty heavy . We had co get out the trysail . staysail and balloon jib . We rigged up a malnsheet with tho topsail sheetS , and a small double block onro the try & all . The sail was all taken off the mast , gaff and boom , and stowed below for ' ard of the mast . The boom and gaff then were stowed on deck .
At 7 am we gladly sighted the reflection of South Head Light a distance of 2 . S miles off . During the day we saw a Jot or bonito following the yacht and Neilsen rigged up a fishing line with a bit of conon lacing , a book and a piece of rag , but we were unsuccessful in caicrung any .
We were abreastofBotany Bay at 7.30 pm and proceeded along the coast with a good SE breeze . We pa .\ Sed Coo gee and Bondi and entered Sydney Heads at 11 pm , casting anchor In Clifton at 11.35 pm .

When the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria first planned staging the Quaner Ton Cup in Melbourne . level mring mcing was at Its peak and the club had plenty of promises of suppon from oveneas yachtsmen . including New Zealand , Briwin , Germany , France , Canada . the United States and Japan . UnforlillUltely level rating bas declined in popularity and the world economic recession put paid to any likely contestanlS from Europe and North America . Despite the lack of overseas entries , the Austra · lian Yachting Federation told the club to go ahead with the series in view of the effort Australian yachtsmen had made in building new boal $ specially for the series . At least the nine final compctitOI '$ had the sansfaclion of a bard-fought scncs . decided only in the final race with three boats in the running fortbe world championship .
Graham Jones won lhe World Quarter Ton Cup with his Dubois-designed Quartermaster with a total of 33.25 points , from Laurie Ouvidsondesigned boats , Quarter Flash , skippered by Victorian , Keith Jones . on 30.00 points . and the Queensland boat , Ocean Racer Chaser . sailed by Ron Dredge , with 28.625 points .
Dredge had been the poinrscore leader going into
the final 200-naulical-mile race around the bay and needed to finish first or second to clinch victory . Graham Jones and Keith Jones bad to win the last race to take out the title .
Quan er Flash led for the first half of the race , but in the light running under spinnaker during the night the RPA YC boat ghosted to the lead .
At that stage Quartermaster was 20 minutes in front of Quarter Flash , followed by another Victorian boat , Slwnrbles , sailed by former Australian Etchells 22 champion . James Byrne , with Ocean Racer Chaser a distant fourth . Tb . rec other Victorian boats , Re-lm • emion , Spectrum and New Wave , were disqualified on the eve of the final race when their delayed JOR ratings came out over the Quarter Ton UmJ1 . The Jn1emn1ional Jury had allowed them 10 snil in the four races pending their rating cc11Jlica1es which had been delayed because of rough weather in Melbourne preventing accurate tests of their inclina · tion figures .
