The following is the account of her trip home from Melbourne , as told by crew member F . C . M ! 1Ckil · lop . Aboard her were WalterMarks ( owner / skipper ). w . E . Moore , F . C . Mackillop , all club members . andamas1ermariner . Captain C . ' eilsen . who acted as navigator .
We cast off moorings at St Kilda at 4 pm on Tuesday 22 March 19 I 0 , hoisted ' Good-bye ', and received a signal from SL Kildn Yacht Club : ' Good-bye and pleasant voyage .'
We set mainsail and staysail and jib and worked down the Western Channel : the wind was light so WC doused the jib and SCI the balloon jib .
On the run down the bay we passed several of the
bay Mcarncrs and at 10 pm dropped anchor at the Pile Ught 10 wait six hours until thecbbtide se1 in . With n light nonherly wind we passed Channel Pile Light at 3.30 and a1 4 am were abreast of Shortland .
Later in the morning we sighted the Aberdeen White SUlr Liner Pericles , we signalled ' TVQB
Cu / wullu ' and dipped our ensign . The Pericles dipped ensign and blew three blasts on the siren .
Liule did we think that when that magnificent liner 5Uid goodbye to us that ii would be a hlSI goodbye . On the one hand a mere sheU of a racing machine . to amve safely a1 our destination : the other . a huge ironclad ship . ~ t lhc bottom or the sea .
The order of the watches was as follows-Mr Marks and Mr Moore rogether and Neilsen and I together . We look four hours on and four hours off , day and night except during the dog wmch in the afternoon 4-6 and 6-8 , which made the eight watches alternative . Neilsen made a very pleasant companion on watch as he is very much a travelled man . being of both sailing and steam ships .
