In 1935 , together with his father nnd brother Les . Harold was a pru1ncr in the foundation of the Avalon Sailing Qub . the fiCSl meeling of which was held in his father ' s boaished a1 Taylors PoinL
In 1947 Harold joined 1he Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and when mcing resumed on the Piuwater after World War U hcre1umcd from active service and won tbe State Bluebird Olampionship in his yacht Cheroue . He laicr sailed his Diamond class yacht Saltash II with dis1inction . winning both championships and club polnr score series . With the advem of the intemutionul clnsses with the club he sailed 5.5 mell ' C yachts . winning more than his share andculminaiing in winning the world championship for that class in France in 1977 .
He served on the club ' s Commineerising to Aag Rank as the club ' s first Captain . He loved children and wa • thc instigator of the building of the Diamond class yacht Kia / or ! by the pupils of Pittwater High School .
It is . however . for his exploits in his passages to Melbourne and Brisbane in llis Diamond class yacht Saltash II that he is best known . The following is Harold ' s account of his voyage to Melbourne :
Leaving Manly Boatshed a1 9 am on Sunday 17 Dcecmbcr 1967 in a 15 knot nor ' easter under full sail and spinnaker . we were off Point Perpen · dicular at 11 pm . At midnigb1 a southerly change , and we ran to Ulladulla for shelter , arriving at 3 am . On Monday , lit 3.30 pm , with the wind from the wes1 al about 25-30 knocs , we decided 10 proceed to Baccmans Bay , arriving there nt 9.30 pm .
