For his services to yachung and his fund-raising cffon . s Bill was awanled 1he CBE . and in 1965 he became 1he Australian Yachtsman of the Year . The following year he was named ' Fa1her of 1hc Year '. accepting 1he honour from his predecessor , Sir Roben Mtn2ies .
During thisbusypenod he became an aldcnnanof the Cily of Sydney and a member of the Administration Board of the Salva1lon Army .

David and John won selection and took off wilh their S1arboa1 for Kiel . the yachting venue for ! he 1972 Olympic Games .
David and John were wonied m ! he preliminary races 10 lhc Olympics as David was getting good sl : uts and sailing well bul other boaL ~ were sailing through them . They noticed thnl 1he bilge of their boat did not appear ro be stable . Pelle Petterson then came up wilh a most sponing suggestion . saying 1ha1 as Sweden had 1wo boais there they could borrow the hul I of the bonl that was bea1en for selection . This happened and David and John found lhemselves sailing agains1 Pelle who had won selection for Sweden . He represented ooeof the se '· enteeo nations that ! he Australians would have to beat .
The breezes ut Kiel an : generally fn :: sh and ii had blown hard before the Olympics started . Bui sure enough . on lhe day of lhe opening race lhc Aus1ralians found themselves all set up for heavy wea1her and with about 4 knots of wlndl The heavy breezes never came ! David . however , continued to pick the shifts . He and John Anderson deserve a loi of cn :: di1 as it cenainly was not Australian weather .
As expec1ed . Edie Bernet from Switzerland was firs1 home in 1hc firs1 heat . He was , however . disqualified and David and John who had finished founh ! hen pushed up to third . S1uanJardine ofGrea1 Bri1ain woo . wilh Pelle Petterson of Sweden & ee0nd . Pelle bad his eyes on David and David bad his eyes on Pelle . The 1icx1 heat Pelle go1 a seventh and David nn eighlh . 111ey bolh did well in lhe lhird hea1- Pelle won and David came second . In the founh heal David go1 a third aod Pelle a founh . One would almos1 think 1ha1 there wen :: only two boats in the race . The fifth heat produced anoiher gn :' 11 banle wilh David founh and Pelle fi fth , bu1 Pelle hlld a slight lead because of his third-heal first . Then disaster struck for Pelle in the sixth heai . a bad stan and n bad wmdward leg . To add to bis woes . David was first around lhe windward mM ' k . Pelle was forced 10 snil ' for a load of wood ', he look a bad tack nnd finished up lns1l Frnmlhcn on i1 was easy for David and John . Pelle had to count his seventh in lhe SC ( lond heal . whereas David could drop his eighth place . He beal Pelle in 1he lasr heat , gcning a third 10 Pelle ' s · fifth and so D : wid Forbes and John Anderson won . for Ll1eclub , ils second Olympic gold medal .
Pelle was too much of a gentleman and sponsman 10 say 10 David : ' You cos1 me a gold medal by my being silly enough 10 lend you 1hat boat .·
