The Sl Kilda Yachl Club had G . V . Laws ( 1he designer of Killara ) design a new 6 metre , The Rip , and challenged for the cup . now held by the Alfreds in Sydney . The two Victorian sixes , Ki / fora and The Rip raced against Rawhlti II on Sydney Harbour for
lhc 1914 cballeoge . 1n lhc first race . both of lhc challengers broke down due to gear failure and Rawhiri II had an easy win . In the second mcc Ki / Iara had a good lead when the gusly wcslcrly changed into a blustery southerly which 1ore Ki // ara ' smainsail . Rawhitl 11 sailed off to a weather shore and took 9 minutes to reef dowo and . wilh reduced sail , was able to ovenalcc The Rip and retain lhc cup for the Alfreds . In spile of World War I , lhe races to contest the
Nonhcole Cup continued . In 1915 Ki / Iara came to Sydney and took the cup off Rawhiti II and in 1916 The Rip took the rrophy off Ki / Iara for the Royal Victorian Yacht Club ' s first win . A cyclone . reported as having attained 200 mph . hit Brighton and St Kilda while The Rip was leading Ki / Iara by S minutes in a race forth <: 1918 Nonhcotc Cul '. Tioc sails on bolh yachts were ripped into taners and the yachts were towed to safely . The Rip again successfully defended the cup on behalf of the Royal Ynchl Club of Victoria .

Kl / Iara and The Rip were named as the Victorian defenders . The fust race was won by The Rip with a 11UU " gin of 2 seconds . In lhc secood race Awanu / 111 lost her rig over the side prior to the starting signal and as a gesture or sponsmansbip , The Rip and Kl / Iara retired . Awanui Ill won the remaining two races and rerumed the cup to New South Wales . In lhefollowingyear , 1921 , Awanui Ill defended lhc cup successfully in Sydney agains1 The Rip .
