THE NORTHCOTE CUP
In 1907 the Squadron challenged for the Sayonara CllpwithC . T . BroclJ > off ' sRawhiti . ayacb1buihand designed in New ?. ealand by Logan . The series was
to be sniled on Pon Phillip Bay . An interested spectator of this series was Lord Northcote , then Governor of the Commonwealth . He was very impressed with the spectacle created by the challenge races for the Sayonurn Cup nnd decided to present a cup for interstate competition for smaller yachts that could be transpon . ed by ship to the pon of tl1e club holding the cup . ratl1er than the vessel having to sail on itS own bo11om to the venue as was required in the deed of gift for the SayonW ". i Cllp .
The Nonhcote Cup ' s deed of gift provided for yachis competing n <> l 10 exceed 7 metres rating . The linear rating rule that was recognised at that time was l / 2 ( L + B +. 75C +. 5- .' SA )= X metres . Recognised yacht clubs from any State could be represented by one yacht only . To launch the new cup . a regana was held on Pon Phillip Bay in 1908 . and as there were no 7 metre yachts entered , it was decided to vary the deed 10 allow 6 metre yachts 10 compete , which included a Soulh Australian entry Mata11gi . The inaugural series was won by Mr Stenniken ' s SJS from the Port Melbourne Yacht Club . Walter Marks ( Commodore 1914-21 ) purchased the 10 metre yacht Awanul from A . C . Saxton and renamed her Cu / wulla Ill . At the same time he had a 6 meue built m Sydney by W . M . Ford . designed by the ScOltish naval architect . Alfred Mylnc , which he named
Culwul / a II . He challenged Victoria for the Sayonara and NorthcOle Cups with his two Culwullas , to
be raced on Port Phillip Bay in 1910 .
He was successful in winning lite Sayonara Cllp with C11 / wulla Ill . However , in his quest for the Northcore Cup he wns not so successful and was beaten by K il / 11ra . owned by a syndicate of members from the St Kilda Club . Killara was designed by an English designer , C . V . Lnws , and built by J . Savage . Ki / Iara won the lirs1 heat easily and managed to win the second race by 13 seconds .
The famous Pcuel CUp was presenred in 1902 by Sydney M . Oempsrer .
The Nonhcore Cup was pre . o ; enied by lord Northcore in 1908 for yach ! racing in 7 me1te rating yachrs in Ausrrulin . lt was convened to 6 metre yach1 racing just before World War I .
