At the beginning of this decade all the divisions started at the same lime on handicap Star ! S so that every boat in all divisions on , say , up to 20 minutes , went off at the same momenL At first the racing flag of each yacht was used , but as the numbers grew it became impractical for the starting officials 10 hold up as many as four flags . so towards the I 950s minute flags were used .
The club by-laws and regulations carried an ios1rUctio11 tl1a1 was bothering yachcsmen of the Lime . lt read : ' Yachts mcing at Piuwater must not approach within 100 yards of Control Tower at
Taylor ' s Point , or within 50 yards of Torpedo Testing Platfonns . · These platforms . or targets . have now been removed but the memory lingers on .
In the beginning , when ocean racing was new 10 the club , handicaps were arbitrary-a metl1od that proved unreliable and compLicated . For ocean races of more than 120 miles · the club changed to the RORC formula , plus percentage adjustments , and this , also . proved rather unsatisfactory . Eventually the I 953 straight out RORC formula was used and this was quite successful . Of cour $ e , all ocean races are flying starts .
