Hls Excellency Lieutenant GeneraJ Slr John Northcon , KCMG , CB . MVO . Honorary Commodore 1946-57 . niere was no quick return 10 the joys of sailing after World War 11 . It was a massive msk for the Navy to decommandeer the ship .~. liners . ynchis and mocor launches . refurbish chem and return them to their owners in the same condition as when commandeered . Some were , or course , lost . Other yachts that had not been commandeered had been left out of ! he water and they were a sorry sight when their owners returned .
It was not u111il I 950-5 I 1ha1 the sport of yachting began to return to normal . The first races after ! he war were ocean rnce- ~. such as the Sydney Hobart
Race conducted by the Crui ~ ing Yacht Oub , the club ยท s Montagu Island Race and Oie 1946 Basin Cup and Lhe lsltuids Race .
Many stories are told of how the Sydney Hobart Race originated . but possibly the most authentic was
given to us by Joyoc Dickinson . a staunch associate
