ALISON documentary launched
After pitching at the Durban Filmart in July, the filmmakers behind ALISON – a
documentary featuring inspirational South African Alison Botha, have entered
pre-production.
The documentary is built around an intimate interview with Alison, who had
protected the film rights of her story until coming to an agreement with director
Uga Carlini last year. The film tells the story of the brutal attack in 1994 in
which Alison was raped, stabbed in the abdomen 37 times, disemboweled
and her throat slashed 17 times. The film focuses on her ongoing recovery
from the trauma of the attack, and uses fairytale animation to reflect Alison’s
retreat into fairytales and stories to cope with the trauma.
Shooting is expected to commence in September with completion scheduled
for May 2015. Uga Carlini directs, with Amy Beatrix Nelson producing and
Georgia Court as DOP. The production company is Towerkop Creations.
Alison Botha says:
I have always hoped that by sharing my own journey with others, it would give
them hope and courage for their own. To have my story and ultimate triumph
shared on screen, would mean that so many more people would see the
power of choice that we each have; and might also choose to triumph over
life's hardships.
Uga Carlini says:
Epicurus states that only one principle will give you courage. That no evil lasts
forever or indeed for very long. I love how in Alison’s story too much of a
good thing can be wonderful and how she with sprinkles of butterflies, faerie
dust and super femininity, leaves footsteps for us to try on for size.
