How many times have you read about a particular position that you know you could be extremely successful in, yet your fear of failure has held you back? How often have you wished for just one chance to show what you can do, and then taken a step back because you thought you were simply not qualified to do the job. Obviously I’m not talking about the types of positions where knowledge does come first such as doctors, lawyers and engineers. We all read the newspapers. What I’m talking about is putting yourself out there with a can do attitude. When your supervisor suggests you add something to your portfolio, do it. If the department manager is looking for a volunteer to head up a project, be the first to put up your hand. It’s not always about the money. If someone approaches your business with an unusual request and it is in-line with what you do, take it on. Success in the workplace and your own business is all about doing that something extra. It might not come back to you immediately, know that somewhere it will. Yes, often, you get a job simply for having been in the right place at the right time. It might not be what you really wanted to do. It is however that proverbial step in the door. It does mean that you may need to put in some extra effort along the way. Hard work never hurt anyone. I can remember having to work until 10pm at night when I first became a HR Manager. Because I leaned out of absolute necessity, I was later able to train administrative staff in such a way that they could learn on the job without fear of failure. Everything you ever get to do adds on to your skill, your experience, your growth as a person. Next time something comes your way and feels like an opportunity, for whatever reason, listen to that instinct. Take a chance on yourself and say yes!
