“Special Basket Games”: from the training
course in Great Britain to a pilot course in
Abruzzo
“Special Basket Games” was one of the results
of the course that involved an international
team of 24 coaches, teachers, educators and
volunteers engaged in the promotion and
implementation of inclusive sports activities.
The teams from Italy, France and the UK,
during the training course in Newquay (United
Kingdom), have undertaken a path aimed
at acquiring skills for the implementation of
inclusive sport activities. Within the international
group, the team made by Maria Victoria del
Casale, Francesca Marini, Francesca Elda Marini
and Ivana di Pardo have planned and carried
out an inclusive sport path focused on individual
basketball fundamentals. The event of the 4th
June was the final phase of the pilot activity
which, between February 2019 and May 2019,
involved students with and without disabilities
from the two institutes of the cities of Vasto and
Roseto.
The program of June 4th
On 4th June, at the Sports Hall “BCC” in Vasto, the first edition of
“Special Basket Games” was held, as a sporting event organized
within the framework of the European project COME In- Creating
Opportunity for sport Members at Grassroots level to Enable
INclusion, a project implemented by OPES in collaboration with
its partners ANESTAPS, Sparc Sport and Special Olympics. The
event involved the students of the secondary school “Gabriele
Rossetti” of Vasto (led by Mrs. Maria Pia Di Carlo), of the institute
“Moretti”of Roseto (having as director Mrs. Sabrina del Gaone)
and the sports associations “Vasto Basket” and “Roseto Oltre”.
The final event of the pilot activity began with
an inclusive basketball game that involved
the “Vasto Basket” team and the ”Roseto-
Moretti-Oltre” team, challenging each other
at the presence of the students of the school
“Gabriele Rossetti”, mindful observers and
ready to support both teams. At the end of
the match, the students of classes 1A, 1C and
1D, of the secondary school “Rossetti” took
part to adapted sport sessions that allowed
the audience to observe the activities ideated
and tested along the path and the classes to
compete in a match that ended without a draw,
but where the real winner was the sport for all.
The activity carried out in the cities of Vasto and
Roseto was only the first step of a path that will
allow OPES, for the next school year, to plan and
implement new projects with the aim to promote
inclusive sport throughout the national territory
and to strengthen the role of sport as a vehicle
of fundamental values.
