09. Why art? I don’t know how to do anything else. *laughter from Roshar* 10. What memorable responses have you had to your work? I’ve actually had people break down in tears when they met me. I didn’t understand it before and honestly, it scared me until I realized that with art, the way you draw a line, can mimic a feeling of a past experience which is what people identify with, and therefore draws a connection from them to you. 11. Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it? For me, it can be as I travel a lot but I have close friends everywhere. I also need to be alone at times just so I can re-charge therefore it can be lonely, but it’s a self-induced solitude. 12. What is your dream project? Hmmm.... Well, you know, just like your definition of success changes over the years, so does the idea of a dream project. I do love to art direct and I love imagining everything coming together. I feel with my life experiences I would delegate quite well. 13. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Be nice to everyone! Today’s assistant could be tomorrow’s boss! 14. How did coming from a small town have an impact on the types of decisions you made to get to where you are now in your career? I lived in a small Texas town and it wasn’t a beneficial environment for a person like me. I moved away at 15 and because I was too young to work, I always lived with girls who would allow me to do their hair and makeup in exchange for free rent. I was also involved in the underground club scene and at that time, I did makeup on myself in order to pay rent. Back during that time, the looks were more focused on characters or walking pieces of art. This taught me how to not look at something for what it is but instead, what it could be. 15. What would you say sets you apart from other artists in the industry? I was told what type of looks I needed to be doing but I didn’t listen because the “natural” looks that were “mar- ketable,” just weren’t me. Years later, I looked up and saw everyone was doing the same thing while I had created a nice niche for myself. 16. You have developed such a great reputation for innovation in the industry: what makes an artist innova- tive? I do not look at fashion magazines or what other people are doing as I believe this allows an artist to grow their own style. I understand why people look to see what’s going on in the beginning, but once you develop your style, it’s best to work off your own intuition.
