his training for the Jesuit order , then Trier , and finally at Perugia , where he taught rhetoric . Spectacularly , Willes apostatised , returned to England , and conformed to the Elizabethan religious settlement . He is remembered as a pioneering collector of geographical narratives , but his first major publication was a book of exactly one hundred numbered poems chiefly in Latin , the Poematum liber of 1573 , featuring for the first time in English printing an extensive array of pattern poems .
