Working at Winchester is often quite breathless , particularly during term-time , for all those involved not only in teaching but also in supporting that mission . Reflecting on achievements over the past year necessarily requires a pause , and it is a pleasure to take a snapshot of the past 12 months .
Our public benefit One of the most manifest outward expressions of public benefit is the provision of means-tested fee remission . As of September 2023 , the school hosts its largest contingent of pupils on bursary support — 145 or nearly 1 in 5 pupils . The support we provide is also highly targeted . 48 of those pupils were previously at UK state schools . Over the long term , the numbers are even more impressive . By the end of this academic year the school will have provided over £ 40m of bursary support for nearly 600 pupils since 2005 .
Partnerships with the Royal National Springboard Foundation and the Crown and Manor Club increasingly enable us to find bright , capable pupils who will potentially benefit most from a Winchester education .
The endowment , the operation of which you will read more about from recently-retired Fellow , Andrew Joy , is central to this programme . Its prudent stewardship and growth across generations is key to funding bursaries now and into the future .
Estate development A major landmark was achieved in September with Winchester City Council ’ s grant of planning permission for the construction of two new Boarding Houses — the school ’ s first for over a century . The school has built a strong partnership with the local council in recent years , and planners were persuaded by the quality of design
