that I took from the school was the importance of being curious . By listening to others in Div classes , I learned that you can only gain a true understanding of an issue from different perspectives . Away from the academics , I made lifelong friends who I ’ m still in touch with today .’
Continuity can be defined as ‘ family traditions holding values and beliefs that are passed down from one generation to the next . Traditions help children feel a sense of belonging and consistency in their family . Identity is often found in the traditions and values of our families ’.
This chimes with my family , and there is clearly a continuum of related experiences from the generations of Youngers ; however , I adhere to the Yasu view ( see page 29 ) that an ancestral lineage , pride apart , is less significant for cementing a connection with Winchester than the individual Wykehamical experience itself .
Certainly individual enthusiasms , as fostered by Dr Hands and shaped by education and culture , serve to influence the time a pupil spends at the school . From my own experience I would include
those of Chapel , Sen Steeplecha , Domum , playing in yard up to House , toytime , walking up to St Catherine ’ s Hill , House spirit , rowing down river , discussion and questioning : all created a uniqueness of character over my five years . My namesake and contemporary at Winchester , Hugh Younger ( I , 1971-75 ) states that he spent many hours casting on the Itchen , a pastime that remains a passion .
And our motto ? In his essay , Yasu noted that an early inscription appears in a 16 th century stained glass window in Bradford Peverell church in Dorchester as ‘ Manare Makythe Man quod William Wykkam ’. The singular ‘ Manare ’ neatly provides a pithy meaning for today : Manner , meaning the way you conduct or comport yourself , and behave toward your fellow man ( in the gender neutral sense ).
Above all , I believe this trait shines through for each Younger generation . Written by JAMES YOUNGER
