A TRADITION OF SERVICE

T here are many distinguished Old

Wykehamist families whose ancestral thread over several generations is entwined with Winchester College : Bruxner-Randall , Eccles , Morse , Moberly , Ricketts and Ridding to name but a few . So , it is a singular honour to represent the Younger ‘ Clan ’ and to be the guest Guest Editor for this Wykeham Journal . The Youngers are fifth generation Wykehamists , with two parallel lineages , one wholly from Chawker ’ s , the other ( namesakes and not kinsmen ) mostly from Hopper ’ s .
I have been fortunate to have lived vicariously through my father ’ s fascinating career : George Younger ( F , 1945-49 ) served as a respected senior Minister in Mrs Thatcher ’ s Government , as a bank Chairman , and as Warden of Winchester ( 1997-2003 ). The original meaning of the word ‘ minister ’ is ‘ servant ’. I have continued this tradition of service , first in my career in Human Resources , from industrial experience in the 1980s in woollen mills reminiscent of the nineteenth century , to the fast , modern and competitive world of Investment and Private Banking in the City ; and over the past 12 years in a second career , in which I have worked as a Minister in HM Government in the House of Lords , as Under-Secretary-of-State in the Business Department , later in the Local Government Department and currently in the Work and Pensions Department . I have also been a Government Whip and a Lord-in- Waiting serving two Monarchs and have covered over time 12 different departments in Government .
I am now serving my fifth Prime Minister , Rishi Sunak ( H , 1993-98 ).
It is therefore apposite that this edition touches on two themes : firstly continuity , which for me relates undoubtedly to political lineage , but also to Winchester , with shared , similar family experiences which span the generations . Secondly , attributes derived from our motto , Manners Makyth Man , can be evidenced in my family line , most notably the duty to serve . Winchester has had a profound ,
