The other essay describes Winchester from the perspective of an ancient culture , far removed from that of Kenneth Clark ’ s Europe . It examines the values of the school through the prism of our motto : what it meant historically ; what it means today . I think the essay helps us to understand what the school is ( and what it is not ) in a way which is relevant to both those who know it well and those who come to Winchester from a totally different background .
James has then identified educational partnerships as a critical component of the school ’ s modern life . Many of these are well-established relationships , dating back decades . All are genuine partnerships , delivering benefits to both parties . In some cases , Winchester dons sit on the Boards of our partner schools . In all cases , our aim is to share the advantages of a Winchester education as widely as possible . We take pride in our Partners ’ success , even if our own contribution is only a small part of the overall education they provide .
Finally , there is a fascinating interview with the Headmaster as he comes to the end of seven transformational years at Winchester . He has done an outstanding job in maintaining the essence and the values of the school , while bringing it into the 21st century , Although we have appointed a truly excellent successor , he will be sorely missed — not least by the current Warden !
I hope these articles will bring to life particular aspects of Winchester and the work we do , beyond our core task of educating our pupils . They reflect the importance we all attach to the school playing a full role in our local community ; to attracting pupils from widely varying backgrounds ; and to balancing the need to modernise aspects of the school with the critical importance of retaining its ethos and character .
WE TAKE PRIDE IN OUR PARTNERS ’ SUCCESS , EVEN IF OUR OWN CONTRIBUTION IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE OVERALL EDUCATION THEY PROVIDE . 4
