elcome to the 2021 edition of the Wykeham Journal . It reflects on a momentous year . During the last 12 months the school has mapped out ambitious plans for the future . We want to widen access , increase the size of the school , and introduce a new focus on technology and entrepreneurship . Simultaneously , we have had to manage the multifaceted challenges of a second year of COVID , while maintaining the provision of top quality education . It is a tribute to the Headmaster , John Cullerne ( Undermaster ) and many others that this was successfully achieved .
This Wykeham Journal looks at some of the major components of the Vision launched in February 2021 . This includes our preparations for the arrival of girls , as seen through the prism of Ali Harber , our new Deputy Head ( Pastoral ). She will play a central role in ensuring that we have the necessary arrangements in place to welcome day girls in VI th Book 2 from this September , and boarders from September 2024 . Although confident about our ability to do this successfully , Ali is clear about the need for careful and thoughtful preparation — learning from the experience of others who have made the same journey .
DURING THE LAST 12 MONTHS THE SCHOOL HAS MAPPED OUT AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR THE FUTURE . Our plans for growing bursary provision are described by Nick Ferguson ( Chairman of the Development Committee and himself a beneficiary of a bursary ). His passion for opening the opportunities which Winchester offers to a wider range of pupils is palpable — as is , I am delighted to say , the progress we are making . Clare Talks describes our work with our local community and the contribution of our pupils in areas varying from hospital wards to conservation projects . It is a programme which benefits the pupils as much as those they strive to help . Community work plays a critical part in preparing our pupils for service as well as leadership . Two sides of the same coin in my view . 3
