THE WYKEHAM JOURNAL 2020
Foundations he introduced a totally new approach to education , designed to open opportunities for intellectual development and material success to those from similar , unprivileged backgrounds to his own . He was not just trying to offer his pupils learning and knowledge . He was preparing them , it seems , for leading roles in Church and State .
The changes announced by the Governing Body are rooted in the same philosophy . We want our pupils to leave the school with a strong sense of values and the intellectual rigour for which Winchester is famous . But we also want them to make a difference — otherwise , what ’ s the point ? That requires an ability to understand and influence a world which has changed beyond recognition since I was in the school 50 years ago . The new Vision developed by the Governing Body is designed to do just that : widen access ; engage more with our local community ( including through day provision ); celebrate the intellectual fizz of boys and girls learning together ; expand Div through a global prism ; and offer a new focus on entrepreneurship and technology .

The second theme has been about access and helping those unable to afford the school ’ s fees . As you will read in Oliver Goodall ’ s story , the support given by the school can transform young lives while benefiting the wider community . This is central to our Vision — as it was to William of Wykeham ’ s . We intend to increase the number of pupils on bursaries ( with on average 70 % fee remission ) to 150 by 2024 . Our ambition is to go well beyond this over the coming 5-10 years . We have also appointed a Head of Partnerships to build a stronger relationship with state schools in Hampshire , drawing on our existing collaboration with Midhurst Rother College and Barton Peveril College . I believe there is much we can do to share the advantages of a Winchester education more widely — not least through the lessons learnt about the potential of remote teaching during lockdown . Some pupils may be better suited to this sort of support than to joining the school on a bursary .
These are exciting times at Winchester , as I hope will become very apparent from this issue of the Wykeham Journal . Thank you for supporting the school over this remarkable year .
