Awarm welcome to this edition of the Wykeham Journal . I would like to give my thanks to this year ’ s correspondent , Margaret Gilmore , and her OW son , Chris Matthews , for their indepth and impartial look at the school .

This edition reflects on an extraordinary year . You will find a series of articles and interviews looking at different responses to the pandemic , revealing how the Wykehamical community rose to the challenge . I ’ m very proud of all that the school has achieved .
Margaret ’ s first interview focuses on the changes announced in early February . These are designed to make the school even better and more successful , while remaining true to the philosophy and values which have endured and evolved over almost 640 years . Winchester

The announcement of the Vision has led to a lively postbag . Thank you for the many positive messages we ’ ve received in support of the announcement . I would also like to thank those who have voiced understandable concerns . Two themes have struck me . The first is the idea that change and modernisation are somehow contrary to Winchester ’ s culture and ethos . William of Wykeham was an innovator , if not a revolutionary . Through his two
