The challenge for Winchester College is getting the balance right between teaching the young to pass exams and teaching them to have inquiring , iconoclastic minds .

The Wykeham Journal celebrates the diverse education that characterises Winchester . Those profiled in these pages maintain it instilled in them an agility of intellect which has helped them deal with the challenges of life and in particular the unprecedented challenges of the past year . Earlier in this journal we ’ ve explored how admitting girls plays into the innovative ethos of the school and its mission to educate for life rather than just to pass exams . It ’ s a move which acknowledges the changing expectations of our society . In the modern world women and men are equal and it follows they should understand and get used to this from an early age . I write as a former parent , and this would not have affected our decision to send our son to the school . We looked at a number of mixed and single sex
