‘An understanding of the
natural world is a source
of not only great curiosity,
but great fulfilment.’
Sir David Attenborough
The flowers which appear throughout
this years’ Journal are reproduced from
Winchester’s copy of Flora Londinensis, 3 vols
(London, 1777-98), by William Curtis.
The volumes once belonged to
Thomas Bargus, who became a scholar
in 1766. It was presumably donated by
him to the library — though there is
no record of this.
