Celebrating Our Successes Sporting, Academic and Musical achievements 2017-18 Inspired by our historic win in the Halford Hewitt golf tournament, we intend to highlight and celebrate our annual successes in the sporting, academic and musical spheres in each Journal henceforth. Sporting Achievements 2 017-18 Golf Cricket Olly Dickman (K, 2015-) won the prestigious international U15 Douglas Johns Trophy with a score of five under par over 36 holes, putting him six shots clear of the competition and equalling the course competition record. The Senior Colts were unbeaten all season. Johnny Figy John (I, 2017-) scored 1016 runs for Lords as well as taking 33 wickets. He also represented the UAE at U19 level and was selected to play in the prestigious MCC Schools’ cricket match against the ESCA at Lords. Sailing Seniors were crowned champions of the BSDRA National Team Racing championships. Karate Six more boys have gained their black belts this year bringing the school’s total to nine 1st Dan and two 2nd Dan. Basketball Winchester won the Wellington Invitational Independent Schools Tournament, beating Wellington, Eton, Bradfield, Harrow, Stowe, Bishop Wordsworth and Pangbourne, then Charterhouse in the final. Fencing Joe Donaghue (A, 2016-) and Dominic Hare (H, 2014-) qualified for the Junior Commonwealth Games representing Scotland and Jersey respectively. Joe also represented Team GB U17 team at competitions in Austria, France and Italy. Rowing The first VIII attended the Metropolitan Regatta, racing in the Academic Eights. They won by one and a half lengths, beating four university teams. James Temple (C, 2009-14) was selected to represent GB Rowing in rounds 1 and 11 of the 2018 World Cup. Hugo Durward (E, 2012-17) was awarded the British Rising Star award. Fives Tom Kidner (E, 2013-18) again won the Open National Schools Singles Championships becoming only the second boy in the 55 years of competition to win both major singles titles two years on the run. Football Joseph Oluwabusola (C, 2016-) who is already a key member of the ISFA U16 National Team and AFC Bournemouth, was picked to represent Nigeria at U17 level.
