AVERAGE VALUE OF BURSARIES AWARDED The school’s bursary programme has increased substantially over the last decade and relative to our size we offer more bursary support than almost any other school. We are poised to start the Kingsgate Park project, which is arguably the largest undertaking the school has contemplated in many decades, maybe even centuries. The full plan will take some years to realise and funding is in place for the first phase, which is by far the largest. As befits the renewed importance the school places on sport and exercise, and the benefits they bring, we start with the new Sports Centre and other sports facilities. The school’s bursary programme has increased substantially over the last decade, and relative to our size we offer more bursary support than almost any other school. In 2017/2018 132 pupils received bursaries at a cost of £3,294,000, equivalent to NUMBER OF BOYS RECEIVING BURSARIES 05/06 06/07 £1,410,596 £1,695,963 TOTAL VALUE OF BURSARIES AWARDED (£) more than 87 full fees and 12% of gross fee income. A further £19,000 was given for extras and school trips. On average, each pupil received the equivalent of 66% of the school fee, enabling many who otherwise would not be able to enjoy a Winchester education to make the most of that opportunity. Ninety-one pupils received support equivalent to 50% or more of the school fee; among these 59 pupils received awards of 80% or more and 14, 100%. This growth in bursaries has, however, put considerable pressure on the school’s resources and for the time being we are having to limit the number and value of the awards. We cannot fully satisfy demand and in each of the last two years we have had to turn away several very able boys who otherwise met the eligibility criteria. In the short term we have made changes to allow us to prioritise more fairly the awards we can make, but longer term we need to increase the size of the bursary endowment. Finally, I commend the College’s statutory accounts to you. They can be downloaded from the school’s and Charity Commission’s websites and give a fuller picture. The first 30 pages are a good read and will tell you much about what the school is doing. This year in particular the emphasis is on Community Service and the astounding amount of good work our staff and pupils undertake for public benefit. . The Wykeham Journal 2018 9
