inspired the students to work at their science skills
and pursue their interests outside designated class
hours. One example displays this newfound
scientific determination in particular. Following
a lesson on rocket science and propulsion –
featuring the classic coca-cola and mentos
experiment – Krishna returned a week later to
discover that the class had all made their own
highly detailed posters on different types of rockets.
Inspired by a session on rockets, the pupils did their own research
and made posters
It’s no secret that Krishna is an incredibly smart
young man, and he enjoys the great sense of
fulfilment that comes with transferring his
knowledge to the eager scientists under his tutelage.
Before starting his role at Community Service, he
already had a great appreciation for the teaching
profession – no doubt due to the improvement it
has had on his life – and was excited to experience
the sense of purpose that he expected to come along
with the role. He was not disappointed. Through
his efforts, he has been instructive in creating young
divergent thinkers.

This picture and the previous one show Krishna with pupils
learning about electric circuits.
Some Wykehamists won’t admit to enjoying
Community Service. To them, it’s merely an easier
alternative to wearing combat fatigues on Meads
every Wednesday afternoon. During my own time
at the school, tales of boys playing ‘I Will Survive’
and ‘Stayin’ Alive’ on hospital radio and the
so-called ‘mega goive’ of bottle recycling were
commonplace. At one point it seemed like half
the school’s pupils were involved in weekly bottle
recycling sessions. However, Community Service
has undergone a quiet transformation in recent years.
The quality of activities and the organisation that
supports them have both improved. As a result,
Sen Men like Krishna can take on real responsibility
in their service. Through this they can recover the
precious knowledge that you are doing something
of real benefit to others and the sense of fulfilment
that comes with it.
Carrying out this Community Service has benefited
Krishna in more ways than his sense of well-being
and fulfilment. Through reviewing basic scientific
theories and lessons, Krishna has reinforced his own
understanding of many areas of science. This, he
claims, was especially useful at GCSE level, where
simpler answers are often more fruitful than detailed,
extravagant responses.
